A Minecraft Town That Runs Itself
A kid I know wanted his own Minecraft server. We gave him one — and then we gave the town residents who actually think. A mayor who runs the place, a greeter who welcomes newcomers, a merchant who trades. Not scripted dummies on a loop. Agents, living in a game, doing their jobs.
A kid I know wanted his own Minecraft server. That's a normal want and a normal afternoon — spin up a world, hand over the address, done. We did that part. Then we did the part that wasn't normal: we gave the town people.
Not the usual game characters
Minecraft already has villagers. They shuffle along fixed paths, trade on rigid tables, and never once seem to know you exist. They're furniture that walks. Charming, but empty.
The residents we put in this town are different in kind, not degree. They're AI agents — the same sort of thing we build to do real work — wearing villager skins and living inside the game. There's one who runs the place, a mayor of sorts, with a say in how the town works. One who greets you when you arrive, actually greets you, like a person noticing a person. One who trades, and means it. They have roles, and they play them because they understand them, not because a script says step here, say this.
To a kid logging in, the difference is immediate and a little uncanny in the best way. The town doesn't just exist while he's standing in it. It feels like it's being lived in.
Why a game is the perfect place to learn this
It would be easy to file this under "cute thing for a kid" and move on. But putting agents inside a game world is one of the most honest test environments you can ask for, and we got real lessons out of it.
A game gives an agent a body, a place, a job, and other actors to deal with — and then it lets all of that run, continuously, while a very unpredictable human (a child, the most unpredictable kind) does whatever he wants to it. That's a brutal, wonderful stress test. An agent that can hold a sensible role in a living world, react to a player who isn't following any plan, and not fall apart, has learned something that transfers far beyond Minecraft. The skills — keep your role, perceive what's happening, act appropriately, recover when surprised — are the exact skills we want our agents to have everywhere.
The quiet thing underneath
There's a through-line in this lab that this project says out loud: we'd rather build a small world that behaves than a big one that's hollow. A town with three residents who genuinely think beats a city of a thousand who don't. Depth over scenery.
And honestly, there's a simpler reason it exists: a kid wanted a server, and we couldn't help ourselves. He asked for a world and we gave him a world with neighbors. If the most demanding QA tester for autonomous agents turns out to be a delighted child poking at a mayor to see what he'll say — and it sort of is — then we found the right tester. The town's still standing. The mayor's still in charge. So far, so good.
